Excursion of the Kenyan Intern Group 2025

From July 1 to 5, 2025, a group of 49 interns from Kenya took part in an eventful and educational excursion week in Mannheim and Stuttgart. Under the guidance of Verena Jauß and Olena Kalinina, various companies and educational institutions were visited.

The excursion began in Mannheim with a visit to John Deere. There, the interns toured the modern production lines and received detailed insights into the individual manufacturing steps. A particularly impressive moment was observing the tractors during the final quality check, including a test of the braking system.

On the second day, the participants attended a seminar on how a machinery ring is organized and what benefits it offers. Machinery rings have also existed in Kenya for several years, so learning about their structure and operation may prove valuable for the interns’ future careers.

Another highlight was the visit to the community-supported agriculture (CSA) project “Marktgarten im Saubad” in Heidelberg on the third day. The staff gave a hands-on presentation of the CSA concept. The interns visited greenhouses, a composting facility, and fields, asked many questions, and showed great interest in sustainable farming methods. In the afternoon, the group had the opportunity to explore Heidelberg before continuing to Stuttgart.

On the fourth day, the interns gained insights into the manufacturing of modern cleaning equipment at Kärcher in Winnenden. The use of robotics in production was clearly explained, and the interns were able to closely observe the assembly of machine housing and their internal components. A special highlight was the chance to test and operate some of the machines themselves.

After lunch, the group proceeded to the University of Hohenheim. The agricultural museum offered insights into the development of agriculture and agricultural machinery over the past decades. This was followed by a visit to the Tropical Institute, where current research topics were presented. The day concluded with the Dies Academicus—a university festival featuring live music, research presentations, student groups, and international cuisine. Here, the interns had the chance to relax, make connections, or enjoy a walk through the university's botanical garden.

The final day began with a visit to the Mercedes-Benz Museum, followed by some free time in the city center before the group gradually made their way to the train station and back to their farms.

The excursion week provided the Kenyan interns with the possibility to gain insights into modern agricultural technology, sustainable farming, and innovative production methods. It not only enhanced their professional knowledge but also promoted intercultural exchange and networking for their future careers.

We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to John Deere, Mr. Thomas Mürschberger from Maschinenring Kraichgau, the SoLaWi Marktgarten im Saubad, Kärcher, and Frank Emmerich and Dr. Marcus Giese from the University of Hohenheim. It is thanks to them that this exciting, impressive, and educational week was made possible.
