Radio Broadcast on Star FM Increases Awareness of Energy-Saving Stoves in Burundi

Reaching 1 million listeners, the segment highlighted practical solutions for climate protection and improved living conditions.

In late July 2025, Burundi’s local radio station Star FM once again featured AKI's environmental initiatives, this time focusing on the growing impact and expansion of energy-saving stoves. Broadcasting in both Kirundi and French, the segment reached an estimated 1 million listeners across five provinces, significantly boosting awareness and interest in the project. The program was aired under the umbrella of community development, reinforcing the social and ecological relevance of the initiative.

The broadcast was divided into two parts. In Part 1, the program spotlighted testimonies from residents of Jimbi village in Commune Gitega, Zone Mungwa. Villagers reported that the new energy-saving stoves have significantly improved their daily lives compared to traditional three-stone fire stoves. Key benefits include reduced firewood use, better indoor air quality, improved safety, time savings, and lower household energy costs.

This grassroots feedback highlights the value and practical benefits of introducing simple but efficient technologies in rural communities.

In Part 2 of the broadcast, AKI’s project coordinator in Burundi, Pierre Maniragarura, explained how the stoves align with AKI’s mission of environmental protection, public health, and sustainable development. “Without the strong engagement of the local population, we would not have achieved this level of impact,” he said, while also acknowledging the vital support of community leaders and technicians.

The reporter concluded by appreciating AKI’s contribution to rural development and encouraged listeners to consider adopting energy-saving stove technology in their own homes.
