Six-months internship in Germany: An Experience that will change the future

Translation of the article published in Ukrainian in the journal “Educational trajecoty: Interactive informational Journal”

From May to November 2025, students from 11 agricultural colleges across Ukraine completed a six-month internship in Germany. The program was made possible through the cooperation between the Scientific and Methodological Center VSPU and AgrarKontakte International (AKI) e.V. within the framework of the German-Ukrainian project Promoting Vocational Education in Agricultural Colleges of Ukraine (FABU).

This internship was more than just a professional learning experience — it offered an immersion into modern agriculture, new technologies, everyday life, culture, and traditions in Germany.

Before departure, the participants completed a preparatory online course in Kyiv, which included language training, cultural orientation, and modern agricultural methods. Particular attention was given to psychological readiness for an extended stay abroad: a dedicated session with a practical psychologist helped students reduce anxiety, prepare for new experiences, and strengthen self-awareness.

In November, the students returned home equipped with valuable knowledge, new skills, and a broader view of their profession.

Below, two participants — Maria Hatsko and Daria Rudyk — share their experiences.

“This internship became an important part of my life”
Maria Hatsko, Boyarka Vocational College of NUBiP of Ukraine

My internship abroad took place in Germany and was a true discovery for me. I worked at Weinhof Dieroff in Baden-Württemberg — a field in which I had no previous experience. I was involved in the entire winemaking process: from vineyard maintenance to wine material processing.

In addition, I carried out seasonal work such as picking pears and apples. The work was physically demanding, but it helped me understand the pace and rhythm of an agricultural enterprise. I am particularly proud that I learned how to drive a tractor — a skill I will surely never forget.

Naturally, there were challenges: language barriers, a new work routine, and being far from my family. However, these experiences made me stronger and more confident. A special highlight was traveling around Germany — discovering new cities and experiencing German traditions, culture, and lifestyle.

I would like to thank the Scientific and Methodological Center VSPU and AgrarKontakte International (AKI) e.V. for their comprehensive preparation: German courses, especially the final intensive week, the meeting with the psychologist, safety instructions, organizational support, and continuous guidance.

This internship will forever remain an important part of my life.

“Germany gave me new knowledge, friends and confidence”
Daria Rudyk, Illinetsky Vocational College of Agricultural Sciences

I study Technology of Production and Processing of Animal Products and had the unique opportunity to complete a six-month internship in Germany this year. Through it, I got to know the life, culture, traditions, and the high level of organization in German agriculture.

Before departure, we completed a four-month German language course, which helped me communicate confidently. My host family was impressed by my skills, and I immediately felt their support and kindness.

My internship took place at Espenhof GbR, a farm specializing in dairy and beef cattle. I was warmly welcomed by the hardworking and caring Eisele family, and we quickly developed a close bond.

I was involved daily in all technological processes on the farm, which allowed me to reinforce my theoretical knowledge, develop new practical skills, and learn modern working methods. The work was diverse and exciting — especially thanks to such a friendly team.

My host family showed their appreciation by taking me on excursions (to rivers, festivals, attractions, swimming pools, or simply to evening barbecues), covering meals at restaurants, and even buying clothing and cosmetics for me. Their warmth made me feel safe and supported at all times.

The internship did not only grant me professional growth — it also gave me a new friend, Kateryna. Together we traveled a lot: in addition to excursions organized by AgrarKontakte International (AKI) e.V., we visited Cologne, Stuttgart, the Oktoberfest, and Lake Constance in Lindau. These memories will stay with me forever.

I am convinced that the internship in Germany raised my professional level and strengthened my competitiveness in the labor market. It is an experience that will form a solid foundation for my future career.

I express my sincere gratitude to everyone involved in organizing this exceptional internship!

The six-month internship in Germany was not only a professional challenge for the students — it was a profound cultural, educational, and personal enrichment.

Thanks to the collaboration between the Scientific and Methodological Center VSPU and AgrarKontakte International (AKI) e.V. within the FABU project, students were able to work on modern agricultural farms, learn new technologies, and discover Europe from the inside.

These personal reports are the clearest evidence that international internships shape a new generation of professionals: confident, motivated, and ready to work according to international standards. Students of agricultural colleges had the unique chance to immerse themselves in German life and culture and to experience modern agriculture first-hand — gaining new knowledge, invaluable experience, and unforgettable impressions.

Preparation for the 2026 internship has already begun in Ukraine: more than 90 students are currently studying German, exploring cultural aspects, and learning about modern agricultural technologies to make the most of their future international placement.

AKI expresses heartfelt thanks to all host farms, partners, and sponsors whose support makes this internship program possible, including the Ministry of Food, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection Baden-Württemberg and the Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank. AKI looks forward to continuing the successful cooperation with Ukraine in the coming year.
