From 22 to 29 January 2026, AKI and its partner Ordre Saint Camille held a Training of Trainers (ToT) in Gitega, led by Ethiopian expert Tegegn Argaw Beyene. The training brought together 13 participants from government institutions, universities, and development organizations.

Designed as a South–South knowledge exchange, the training combined regional expertise with local realities and participatory learning approaches. Participants completed ten interconnected modules integrating Sustainable Land Management (SLM), Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), and Permaculture into a holistic farming systems approach.

Key topics included:

• Soil health and erosion control
• Water harvesting
• Forest & environmental protection
• Agro-ecological diversification
• Agroforestry
• Nutrition-sensitive agriculture
• Post-harvest handling
• Farm business skills
• Gender- and youth-inclusive agriculture

Learning was practical, combining classroom discussions, field demonstrations, and peer-to-peer exercises. Participants are now ready to cascade the training to other trainers and farmers. 

The ToT approach strengthens Burundi’s agricultural development by building local expertise and promoting low-cost, locally adapted solutions, supporting food security, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods in Gitega and beyond.
