According to Global Forest Watch (GFW), Burundi lost around 38,000 hectares of trees and forest area between 2001 and 2024 - mostly without compensation through reforestation. To counter the effects of climate change, a tree nursery was established in Gitega in 2024 as part of the "Green Future" project. Even after the official project ended in December 2024, it continues to make an impact.
The long-standing AKI partner, Ordre Saint Camille, now operates the tree nursery independently. It creates jobs, generates income for further project activities, and serves as a compelling example of sustainable local engagement.
The team is currently preparing the distribution of around 100,000 trees, including Artemisia, papaya trees, Maesopsis eminii, Grevillea, and Christmas trees. The cultivated trees and crops strengthen food security and income opportunities while simultaneously making an important contribution to climate and environmental protection by capturing CO₂, preventing soil erosion, improving soil fertility, and promoting local biodiversity.
People behind the project
Brother NDIKUMASABO Angelus, Director of AKI Projects in Gitega, says:
“I am proud of our achievements and grateful for the support. The trainings on environment and reforestation have strengthened our community in a sustainable way. Today, our tree nursery is the largest in the region and provides great benefits for both people and the environment. Through the sale of trees and fruit, we secure income for the project.”
Pierre MANIRAGURA, AKI Project Coordinator on site, adds:
“The project has shown me how closely human life is connected to the environment and that trees play a crucial role in providing clean air, a healthy living environment, and maintaining the balance of the entire ecosystem.”
Bruder NKURUNZIZA Remegie, Responsible for sustainability, explains:
“The tree nursery is more than just work for me – it is part of my calling to protect the environment. We green bare areas, reduce air pollution, and encourage others to preserve nature for a better future.”
HAKIZIMANA Febronie, a daily worker in the tree nursery adds:
“Through my work in the tree nursery, I earn my income and contribute to the well-being of my family. At the same time, by planting trees, we make an important contribution to environmental protection. The fruits of what we sow today will be harvested by our children.”
Sustainable outlook
The tree nursery stands as a symbol of partnership, local engagement, and the practical implementation of the SDGs. In the future, it will play a central role in reforestation in the region. AKI continues to actively support environmental protection measures and motivates the community to engage in creating a sustainable future.
The project “Green Future” was funded by the Ministry of Food, Rural Affairs and Consumer Protection of Baden-Württemberg (MLR).
