From June 10th to 20th, 2025, AKI Project Manager Teklezghi Teklebrhan visited AKI’s ongoing and completed projects in Burundi. The visit served two main purposes: to monitor and evaluate the progress of current project activities, and to jointly plan upcoming initiatives in collaboration with the local project team.
Monitoring of Ongoing Projects
During his stay, the project manager visited various sites, including the construction of energy-saving stoves, bread-baking wood stoves, and a biogas facility. Model villages that have adopted energy-saving stoves were also part of the visit. In these communities, awareness of the environmental and climate-related benefits of the stoves has reached the entire population. Village chiefs and residents have expressed strong support for the initiative and are working closely with the project team - clear evidence of the project’s positive impact and community ownership.
Review of Completed Projects
As part of the visit, Teklezghi Teklebrhan also reviewed the outcomes of earlier project phases. The local partner, Ordre Saint Camille, has taken full responsibility for operating the "Agri-Social Education and Training Centre in Gitega" without external financial assistance. The center is now financed through its own income-generating activities - an encouraging sign of long-term project success and partner autonomy.
Conclusion and outlook
Deeply impressed by the commitment and high motivation of the local teams, AKI Project Manager Teklezghi Teklebrhan concluded the visit on an optimistic note:
“With such a highly motivated team on the ground, the project is clearly moving in the right direction and making strong progress.”
AKI will increasingly expand its project activities to remote rural areas. A key focus will be on sharing knowledge and practical skills with farmers. Future projects will concentrate on food security, environmental protection, and sustainable land management to strengthen rural livelihoods in the long term.
This project is implemented with financial support from the State Parliament and the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg through the Foundation for Development Cooperation Baden-Württemberg (SEZ).
