AKI is expanding its engagement in Burundi by launching a new project in another region titled “Strengthening Climate-Resilient Agriculture and Climate Protection in Ngozi.” The project is being implemented together with our long-standing partner Ordre Saint Camile and a new partner, the Environment Conscious Youth Association (ECYA) in Ngozi. Initial contact was established when the president of the association participated in an idea competition organized by AKI and its partner in Burundi, during which she introduced the concept of vermicomposting, an approach that aligns closely with the project objectives. 

On 18 February 2026, the AKI team from Gitega, led by Project Manager Teklezghi Teklebrhan, held a strategic planning workshop with ECYA in Ngozi to develop the project roadmap.

Since 2020, AKI has successfully implemented projects focusing on sustainable land management (SLM), climate-resilient agriculture, and environmental protection in the Gitega region. Building on the experience gained in Gitega, we are now transferring proven and locally adapted approaches to Ngozi.

As in Gitega, smallholder farmers in Ngozi face increasing challenges: degraded soils, recurring climate shocks such as droughts and irregular rainfall, and limited access to sustainable energy. These pressures contribute to declining yields, food insecurity, and growing strain on forest resources. 

The project addresses these challenges through climate-resilient and ecological agricultural practices. Measures include sustainable land management, organic fertilization, biochar use, and clean energy solutions such as biogas systems and energy-efficient stoves to reduce emissions and deforestation. Women and youth play a central role as key actors of change, while agricultural extension agents and local technicians serve as multipliers, strengthening local capacities and creating income opportunities. 

The project aligns national strategies on food security and climate adaptation while reinforcing local knowledge exchange.
