Climate Protection through Biogas – AKI’s Efforts to Combat Deforestation in Burundi

Burundi is among the countries with the highest dependency on biomass: over 90% of its energy needs are met by wood and charcoal. This has led to massive deforestation, resulting in the destruction of forests, significant CO₂ emissions, and serious health risks – especially for women and children who are exposed to smoke while cooking.

To counter this development, AKI initiated a project to introduce small-scale biogas systems in Burundi. The units are built using local materials and powered by cow dung.

Brother Angelus Ndikumasabo is excited about the project:
"Biogas is really a solution to environmental, climate, and health problems. Our kitchen stays clean - no smoke, no dust. We don’t cut trees anymore, so it’s good for the climate. It also gives us clean energy, and once it's set up, there are no more running costs. We’ve stopped spending money on firewood. I encourage all farmers to get on board - this is about protecting the future for the next generations."

This project is implemented with financial support from the State Parliament and the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg through the Foundation for Development Cooperation Baden-Württemberg (SEZ).
