Sweet potato bread from Burundi receives gold award from the Academy of German Bakery Crafts in Weinheim

As part of the "Bread Summercamp 2023", the sweet potato bread from Burundi was awarded a gold award at the renowned competition of the Federal Academy of German Bakery Crafts in Weinheim. AgrarKontakte International (AKI) e.V. and Bread Against Misery are pleased about the gold award for the sweet potato bread from Burundi.

Oliver Flodman project manager at Bread Against Misery Foundation, Master baker and bakery technician, experimented with various locally available ingredients such as sweet potatoes and avocados in Gitega, Burundi in July 2023 and developed the sweet potato bread recipe.

The sweet potato bread was judged one of the best five breads among the 29 competing breads and was awarded one of the coveted gold medals.  In addition, the sweet potato bread was featured on national radio in Burundi, highlighting the importance of innovative bread baking in empowering local communities through the use of indigenous ingredients such as sweet potatoes and avocados.

Special recognition goes to the dedicated trainers Oliver Flodman and his team consisting of Lucy Ezatiru from Uganda and Alice Karerwa from Burundi from the Bread Against Misery and AKI's team on site. Their expertise, passion and commitment have been instrumental in the success of the sweet potato bread.

Special thanks go to Mr. Christian Falkenstein and Mr. Johannes Stegmaier, who financed a dough kneading machine and bread slicer for the project, thus ensuring efficient and economical production of the breads.

AgrarKontakte International (AKI) e.V. and Bread against Misers will jointly develop and support the bread project. They are committed to ensuring that the bakery craft in Burundi can flourish and that the positive impact on the community continues to be built.

The project "Agricultural Social Education and Training Center in Gitega" is funded by the Ministry of Food, Rural Areas and Consumer Protection - Baden-Württemberg (MLR) since August 2020.
