When Entire Villages Take Action: Climate Protection from Within the Community

In rural regions of Burundi, AKI technicians are carrying out vital awareness work. They educate the population about the causes and consequences of climate change, highlight the severe impacts of deforestation, and present concrete, practical solutions.

In close cooperation with village chiefs and with active participation from local communities, they share hands-on knowledge on how to protect the environment and to slow the progression of climate change.

Training sessions have already taken place in numerous villages around Gitega - including Gaca, Kabuye, Kigwati, Gatwaro, Jimbi, Mohororo, Masenga, Mwungua, Nyabisaka, and Kibwete - reaching more than 10,000 people so far.

At the heart of the initiative is the construction of energy-saving cookstoves: simple, low-cost, and locally made solutions that significantly reduce firewood consumption, lower smoke emissions and accident risks, and make daily life noticeably easier for families.

The strong response and high level of engagement in the villages show that this project is truly effective - ecologically, socially, and in the everyday lives of the people.

This project is implemented with financial support from the State Parliament and the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg through the Foundation for Development Cooperation Baden-Württemberg (SEZ).
